Album of the week

Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

Lately I've been on this mellow yuppie downtempo electronica kick that is my generation's equivalent of easy listening. Stuff like Morcheeba, Zero 7, Thievery Corporation, etc. So I finally shocked some sense into me with the latest Prodigy offering. Yum!! Very brash and catchy. Only Prodigy can take riffs from Love Buzz (remember Nirvana's Bleach?) and Michael's Jackson's Thriller and turn them into something new and interesting.

Full of vitamins, full of goodness.

The Spinach House is coming to Roanoke!

I gets lonely livin' in the country

On Feb 6th, Kathryn, Iris, and I were headed towards Snowshoe for our little weekend ski trip. Near Covington, we exited I-64 and stopped in a Subway to get some sandwiches. While waiting in the car with Iris, I spotted something out of the corner of my eye painted on the side of a nearby train car. Several double-takes later, I took this picture:

Yes, it says "Do not hump". Yes, I still have an immature brain, causing me to laugh like a 12-year old upon seeing this. And, yes, there is a good reason for such an obscure warning: (link)

An interesting twist of an overplayed theme:

He's a g**damn f***ing poet!

An interesting poetic line from Josh:

"I have several crutches and they are all mine. Some are plated with gold and some are silken fine."

Word of the day

octothorpe (noun): Another name for the telephone handset symbol #.

Apparantly, there are never enough words for things. Back in MY day, we would just grunt and scratch ourselves. And we LIKED it!

Spiritual Humanism

Finding Secular Humanism a tad too ego-centric, I had a look at There, you can "become an ordained member of the Spiritual Humanist clergy for FREE". Strange that this is the very first thing on the page that you see - I guess this is the hook! Alas and alack, there are some significant powers a Spiritual Humanist clergymember simply does not enjoy, as mentioned in the FAQ on the site:

You are prohibited from performing ceremonies that involve exorcism, circumcision and animal sacrifice.

What, all at once?!? Damn!!! What a party that would be!

Understatement of the year

"When you see the water going down, this is not so much a good
idea to go and collect beautiful shells."

- Alexander Rabinowitch of the University of Moscow during a
videoconference on tsunamis at the Pacific Geoscience Centre,
Vancouver Island in March 2005.

The thaw

The inevitable coming of Spring reminds me to enjoy a classic oft-referenced Calvin and Hobbes comic strip:

Garlic butter

Apparantly, this robot lobster is being developed by the Navy:

Imagine seeing one of those next time you go scuba diving!

Iris' spoonerism

We've got these dried apricots that we give to Iris now and then. So, we've been trying to get her to say "apricot". Instead, she says "acripot".

Undaunted, we tried to fool her by asking her to say "acripot". Sure enough, she ends up saying "apricot".

Jargon watch

Watch out for this lameness:

Definition: "the film blogosphere"; that is, the pile of people rambling about films via their blogs.

And on that note - I saw Sideways last night, and it is a fantastic flick. The wallet-snatching scene is one of the funniest things I have seen in a movie in a long, long time. If you like About Schmidt, you will definitely like Sideways.

Memorable exchange from the movie:

Miles Raymond: Well, the world doesn't give a shit what I have to say. I'm not necessary. Had. I'm so insignificant I can't even kill myself.

Jack: Miles, what the hell is that supposed to mean?

Miles Raymond: Come on, man. You know. Hemingway, Sexton, Plath, Woolf. You can't kill yourself before you're even published.

Jack: What about the guy who wrote "Confederacy of Dunces"? He killed himself before he was published. Look how famous he is.

Miles Raymond: Thanks.

Jack: Just don't give up, alright? You're gonna make it.

Miles Raymond: Half my life is over and I have nothing to show for it. Nothing. I'ma thumbprint on the window of a skyscraper. I'm a smudge of excrement on a tissue surging out to sea with a million tons of raw sewage.

Jack: See? Right there. Just what you just said. That is beautiful. 'A smudge of excrement... surging out to sea.'

Miles Raymond: Yeah.

Jack: I could never write that.

Miles Raymond: Neither could I, actually. I think it's Bukowsky.

Strange hamster anime

A bizarre anime finding from Clint, entitled "Oruchuban Ebichu", is described thusly:

An anime that is severly ecchi, about a hamster named Ebichu. She is the housekeeper of "Office Lady"'s apartment (whom she addresses as "Goshujin-sama", which means owner-master) and has a weird knack for having sexual psychic thoughts. Her owner's boyfriend is named "Kaishounachi" which literally means "worthless". (link)
More shocking is when Ebichu gets violently smashed, stompped, etc. into a bloody pulp by her owner. Her owner is in her 30's and in a relationship with a man who's name means "worthless" and he lives up to that name by sleeping around. Of course she doesn't want to be told the truth, so Ebichu is going to be violently beaten for being told this and for all sorts of other offences.

South Park might be rendered tame by comparison!
